Summary: United Way NCA is seeking an experienced and licensed independent clinical social worker (contractor) to help launch a new partnership with a retail chain in the District of Columbia. The social worker will play a leadership role in developing and evaluating a pilot program to deliver case management and clinical services at select retail store locations to customers in crisis. This position will support a portfolio of retail stores by providing clinical services to customers dealing with crisis around substance abuse, homelessness, mental illness. The position will also educate and work alongside local United Way NCA staff, as well as national partners, to help develop scalable strategies for retail store managers to better serve customers facing these issues. The social worker will be based at United Way of the National Capital Area’s offices in the District of Columbia and make frequent visits to retail stores in the District to deliver clinical services.
Responsibilities: Provide clinical care to customers in crisis: • Supervise a case manager to identify and support customers who may benefit from mental health and/or case management services through direct clinical observation and/or referral by the retail partners. • Provide “reactive” clinical support to a portfolio of retail stores, leading efforts to de-escalate incidents involving customers in crisis and connect them with long-term support. Work with the retail chain, United Way NCA, and United Way Worldwide to build the pilot program and develop lessons learned: • Provide consultation to retail store managers through de-briefings during and/or after an incident has occurred with a customer. • Collaborate with the retail chain to shape the program, identifying areas of need and strategizing solutions on an on-going basis. • Educate retail store managers on a variety of topics related to serving customers who may be unhoused or in crisis, potentially including trauma informed care, best practices and resources for providing social service information and referral. • Work with United Way NCA leadership and the retail chain to design and conduct program evaluations and produce regular reports of program impacts, outputs, best practices, and unmet needs; this includes outputs and outcomes related to customers accessing clinical and case management services, as well as the experience of retail store staff and customers measured both quantitatively and qualitatively. • Help determine long-term staffing strategy for the retail chain social work team that optimizes staff resources while meeting program goals.
Required Education and Experience: • Master’s degree in social work from an accredited school of social work is required. • Licensed by the State Board of Social Work required • Minimum of five (5) years of social work experience working directly with individuals. • Must be able to function independently and have flexibility, personal integrity and the ability to work effectively with customers, clients and support agencies. • Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset and at times hostile people within the facility. • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action. • Travel in the District of Columbia primarily during the business day is required.
